There Have Been Inadequate Warnings That...

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Drugs Can Cause Blindness

Posted 12/05/2005

Fifty reports of ischemic optic neuropathy (ION), usually resulting in irreversible unilateral blindness, in men using the erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra had been received by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by March 2005. But the FDA and the companies have downplayed the link between these drugs and ION, stating, correctly, that the disease also occurs in men with cardiovascular risk factors who do not take erectile dysfunction drugs, but implying that the cause is cardiovascular risk, not the drugs. To test this, we compared the rate of reports of ION, per million prescriptions filled, in those using ED drugs with the rate in those using Lipitor -- both groups having presumed increased cardiovascular risk.

For Viagra, there were 18 times more reports of ION per million prescriptions than for Lipitor and, for Cialis, 25 times more reports. Thus, it is very likely that the drugs can actually cause blindness in some people. Further evidence of causation can be seen in a case report in which one patient using Cialis suffered reversible visual field defects each time within 2 hours after taking 4 sequential doses of Cialis and suffered permanent partial loss of vision shortly after the fifth dose.[1] Our organization has thus petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to immediately require a black box warning on the labels for all 3 drugs, to require an FDA-approved Medication Guide for patients that contains the black box warning, and to begin a registry of all cases of ION following the taking of ED drugs. The full petition is at www.worstpills.org. Dr. Howard Pomeranz, the neuroophthalmologist who first published a report of ION in a man using an ED drug,[2] and has added 13 further cases, has joined us in the petition.[3] A rapid response from the FDA is mandatory.

That's my opinion. I'm Dr. Sidney Wolfe, Director, Public Citizen's Health Research Group.

Commonly popular as impotence, erectile dysfunction is defined as the lack of ability to achieve or sustain erection compulsory for sexual gratification. ED is entirely distinct from other tribulations interfering sexual intercourse, such as lack of sexual desires, and problems linked with ejaculation or orgasm.
Impotence had been hampering the sexual life of millions since times immemorial but their wasn’t any easy available treatment for this disorder.

Earlier the disorder was treated through surgical methods but the emergence of Viagra in April 1998 changed the whole trend. Viagra was an instant success. The magical blue pill was a boon for millions of ED sufferers round the world. After Viagra came Cialis and Levitra.

Types of ED drugs - (Erectile Dysfunction) Drugs

Viagra: Viagra’s absorption is affected by food. Viagra takes 30 minutes approximately to begin absorption, and it takes one hour to reach maximal concentration. It loses 50% highest concentration every four hours. Viagra should be taken on an empty stomach. There should be no food intake two to three hours prior to taking the pill. It takes at least one hour for sexual stimulations. Sexual stimulation is also necessary. Don’t wait for more than four hours.
Levitra: Levitra reaches its peaks concentration after 40 minutes. It is only affected by a very high fat diet. There are some instances when people consuming this drug with food getting not affected by absorption and maximal concentration.
Cialis: It is not affected by any food absorption whether it is light or contains pure fat. As we know, Viagra and Levitra can not be taken with fat food. This is the plus point of Cialis. Cialis is the true "weekend" erectile dysfunction drug. This is the only drug which has its effectiveness for 36 long hours of timeframe. Important Information Links

Are you compromising your health to save a few dollars. Every day, thousands of Americans, shop on websites that promote and sell counterfeit prescription medications without knowing that they are breaking the law and jeopardizing their health.

The drugs of main concern are the blockbuster drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. Millions of pills are made every year by companies in India, Mexico and other countries and sold to the American public illegally. What people need to be aware of is that more than half of these illegal medications contain little to none or too much of the active ingredient.

The public must know that these drugs are counterfeit. If a company in India made U.S. currency and sold it to the public for a ¼ of what it is worth, people would say, that is definitely illegal. So what is the difference? The only difference is that counterfeit drugs can harm you and even kill you.

If you had a loved one that was in need of a specific medication, would you choose to buy an illegal medication from another country? Or for the safety of that loved one would you choose to buy the real thing? With that in mind, would a loved one want you to take such risks in order to save a little money?

Not only are people compromising there health and even life to save a few dollars, they are breaking the law as well.

Laws Broken by the Makers, Sellers and Buyers of Illegal Generic Medications

  1. Copyright laws
  2. Importation Laws
  3. FDA Packaging and Labeling Laws
  4. Public Health Laws
  5. Federal and State Laws
  6. Anti-Counterfeiting Laws

The people need to know about the potential risks importation and drug counterfeiting poses to their health and our nation's drug supply. And like narcotics, fake drugs are life threatening.
